Hello folks,
We are so glad to have you join us in our slow chats world!
Summertime is here for us in the North and with the change in season we are noticing an upwelling of uncertainty — not only in the world, but in ourselves too, including with this project. So, with this swarm of uncertainty intensifying, we are taking time to listen more.
Grounded Futures was never about thinking we knew what the future held, because of course no one can ever know, but it was about amplifying and unearthing grounded knowings, voices, stories, and happenings! With sharing some stories, we have always aimed to bring more inspiration to the fore and maybe even show some new(ish) pathways towards collective liberation and thriving futures. One thing we are for sure feeling more these days is that when we launched Grounded Futures in the summer of 2020, we all felt a greater sense of grounding than we do today.
So, as we go deeper into listening and paying more attention to these (un)grounded times, we have decided to slow down “production” and revisit the why. And for us, that means doing the vital work of tending to the soil before we plant new seeds. In other words, this summer we will be under a kind of repair, sitting with the many questions bubbling up, and as always, to tune more into the cracks of joy on our peripherals.
But before we do this much needed tending, we have a few more things to share below…

STORYLOOM
Just as summertime began we held our first event in person collaborative writing day, called Storyloom.
Friends, new and known, gathered to collaborate and experiment together through story. We spent the day building characters and worlds, first on our own through prompts, creative stations, embodied workshops, and face painting. The later half of the day was spent weaving our worlds together — and what beautiful worlds we made!
From matriarchal quests that became unbound from time and the tangible, to oceanic stories of abundance, and scarcity — we explored how our characters could live and interact in the worlds of our dreams, and ultimately, we explored how collaboration and community always plays its part.
This pilot event was a beautiful day of connection, storytelling, and collaboration. Thank you to those who came!
2. Writings
On our website we have a new section for sharing writings. Check out the first post keeping care in times of crisis here!
From the Analog-Love department:
A few of us have been working on an interactive workbook called, Wording Our Worlds (WOW!)
WOW is here to help you and/or your crew to become more aware of the subtle and obvious ways the english language can cause harm in our writing and media projects.
For the first workbook we are focusing on three key areas:
1. Ageism (adult supremacy)
2. Sanism/Neuro-difference
3. Decentring Colonial Knowledges and Thoughts
With W.O.W we want to support folks to Say What They Mean!
Walking with Change: Need some inspiration about traversing these uncertain and violent times? Want to hear about creating new worlds otherwise? Then check out the wonderful episode, Practicing Autonomy with Raúl Zibechi! Raúl joined carla for the first episode of their new podcast Walking with Change!
Meat + Three: We loved this episode about Robert King and the Angola 3. “This episode delves into the bittersweet history of pralines, revealing their deep connections to the legacy of slavery, the innovative spirit of African American women, and the enduring fight for freedom and equality.”
The Story of Makwa (Black Bear): This short illustrated story illustrated by Jamie-Leigh, tells the story of how Kebaowek First Nation is trying to move the location of a nuclear waste storage facility that is being built on their territory without consent — and asks us to consider who will be impacted by this decision, beyond just human kin. Kebaowek First Nation will be on July 10 and 11th, and you can send words of solidarity to be read aloud at a rally outside the courthouse in Ottawa here.

Thank you for reading! We’ll be back with our autumn slow chats before we know it, and we will be sure to share about what is on the horizon for Grounded Futures.
Till then, Free Palestine, end all wars, crush colonialism, abolish empire, and please keep care of one another!
love,
carla, Jams, and Uli
