Hello everyone,
Happy Spring Equinox — may the balance of light and dark spring up more justice and joy for all!
Over the past two years we’ve been dreaming and scheming ways to create art with our community in person — to move beyond doing primarily digital arts. In part, this pull to be together more is because most of us have spent our artistic lives in and with community, and we miss that way of being together! For us, gathering in a physical space where we create some art, have fun, inspire each other, and ultimately connect feels more urgent these days… So, with this desire and its fairly loud call to find more ways to connect in a physical space, we are very excited to share that this is the year we are finally going to do something about it! We have made plans for our first one-day summit for storytellers, called Storyloom, which we share a bit more about below. We are starting off small, but it feels HUGE to us!
Of course, we will continue to create digital media art projects with and for our community because we absolutely love to make all kinds of art (more updates coming soon)! Part of this love for what we do is that we get to collaborate with fabulous folks across lands. And in those creative moments, whether it’s on or off line, it often brings to the fore joyful and thriving moments. We embrace these moments as they can be a respite (even for a day) from our collective and personal struggles.
And amidst the ongoing disasters and the more recent daily barrage of devastating and heart wrenching crises and atrocities, we are finding more ways to be there for each other and beyond. Deepening and expanding webs of care and mutuality feels more urgent than ever.
So with all of that woven together, we are especially grateful to everyone who shared and donated to our successful fundraiser this past month! THANK YOU!! These kinds of creative endeavours and acts of solidarity tend to our hearts and help us to feel more love, and indeed helps us to do more for each other! This includes helping us to continue to be in solidarity with folks in our orbit and across the world, doing what we can from where we find ourselves.
Below are some updates about the projects that have recently bloomed or gone to seed, and ones about to sprout!
On Belonging — an audio series to connect us:
we launched the 9 part series this past winter and we are enjoying hearing from listeners how these stories have been expanding networks of care and cultivating belonging in the every day! You can listen here.
We have launched an online analog love store where you can grab some very cute art:
An On Belonging community engagement piece:
We would love to hear your stories of Belonging! So, if you feel inspired the prompt is: How are you cultivating belonging in the every day?
Hearing how each of us cultivates belonging in the every day has the potential to show other ways to find connections, to create resistance while thriving, and to find the cracks in the structures that seek to divide us.
With your permission, we will be posting your stories online (which we can share anonymously)! You can share in a few different formats: send us up to 1 min audio or video recording (this can be done on your phone! No need for professional quality!) OR up to 4 written sentences(ish) — we will make an image for it, or send along 1 single graphic/image with your words on it! Please send it to us by April 15, 2024! Send through this google form or email to [email protected].
A Pilot Project — Storyloom:
Grounded Futures is doing its very first in person event! To start, this pilot event will be a one day summit that we’re hoping blooms into more opportunities to be in community together in the future! Join us on Lək̓ʷəŋən territory (colonially known as Victoria, BC) on June 22, 2024 for Storyloom: collaboration — a storyteller’s summit.
What is it? A one day summit for storytellers to come together to create, co-learn, cross-pollinate our dreams and knowings, and weave our stories together. Throughout the day, we will explore: co-creation and collaboration, practical workshops and skills-sharing stations including co-making lunch — together we invite you to join us in grounding in our collective futures (and more!).
At the Storyloom Summit we want to deepen what storytelling is and can be, while also expanding on the who and the what creates story! To us, a central purpose of art is to tell stories.
May this spring bloom more peace and justice across all lands — sparking the end to the genocide in Gaza (Free Palestine), and may we continue to fight for Justice and abolish all occupations everywhere.
Love and Solidarity!
